Recap

            Las Vegas fell to Round Rock by a score of 4-1 for a second straight night, but maintained their 2.5 game lead over El Paso because they lost as well. 51s starter Matthew Bowman would allow a two out rally in the 2^nd and then a two run bomb to Joey Gallo in the 3^rd inning, and that was more than enough for Round Rock starter Chi Chi Gonzalez and company. After a great run to finish the 2014 season with Las Vegas, Bowman has put together a forgettable 2015, and you can’t just blame his struggles on the high offense environments in the PCL, he’s just been bad.

Bowman still left Las Vegas in a good position to win, and then Zack Thornton, John Church, and Dario Alvarez combined for 2 innings of scoreless relief behind him, but the 51s base runners kept running into outs. They went 1-4 on stolen base attempts, which stunted a few rallies before they had a chance to start. Overall, It was not a good effort for Las Vegas, who lost Darrell Ceciliani, who has been one of their hottest hitters to the DL Saturday, after he appeared to pull a hammy Friday night. Just like the B-Mets, the Las Vegas offense has been all in or bust lately instead of consistently putting up the 5-6 runs they need to go on a winning streak – they have a scoring average of 5.33 runs/game, but have lost 6 games during which their pitching has allowed 4 R or less since 8/13.

This series wraps up Sunday evening at 7:05 PM, with Dillon Gee (7-3, 5.02 ERA) scheduled to face off with Anthony Ranaudo (7-5, 4.42 ERA), and Las Vegas looking to snap a 2-game skid.

Recap

            Tim Stauffer continued his great pitching run for Las Vegas Thursday night by finishing just shy of a complete game shutout. After a rough start to the season relieving in the big leagues, Stauffer has turned things around big-time since becoming a starter again for Las Vegas. His stuff isn’t overwhelming anyone, but he’s hitting his spots, and outthinking these young PCL hitters. The only well-struck hit that he allowed all night was a double over Kirk’s head leading off the 7^th inning, and Stauffer would stifle the next 3 batters to escape the jam. Las Vegas jumped ahead in this game thanks to a two run blast from Kirk in the 4^th inning, but otherwise they could get little going against Round Rock starter Robert Coello. Stauffer would allow a leadoff single and surpass 100 pitches with one out in the 9^th, so Wally chose to go to his pen for the final two outs in a 2-0 game during a pennant race. Dario Alvarez induced a lineout to SS, and then John Church came in to strikeout Ed Lucas, which finished the game.

            This series continues Friday night at 8:05 PM, with Seth Lugo (2-0, 3.06 ERA) scheduled to pitch opposite Francisco Mendoza (1-0, 2.76 ERA).

Recap

            While the Mets a level above them and the B-Mets a level below them both reached double-digits in runs Monday night, the Las Vegas 51s were shutout in New Orleans, which represents a role reversal in offensive output for those 3 Mets affiliates. The 51s have been one of the best offenses in the PCL this year (and last year…), and they’ve been especially hot with a host of recent major league regulars filling their lineup, but they could manage only a pair of hits from Matt Reynolds and Kirk Nieuwenhuis against the Zephyrs. Those two did manage to both pick up a hit in the 4^th, but then Kirk was doubled off of 1B on a fly out to RF from Kevin Plawecki. 51s starter Matt Bowman looked good working a 1-2-3 frame in the 1^st, and took care of the bottom of New Orleans order with no problems in the 4^th, but the Zephyrs would touch him up in the 2^nd, 3^rd, and 5^th innings. He should’ve been out of the 3^rd inning when he picked up a strikeout with two outs, but the wild pitch got away from Plawecki, which allowed the inning to continue long enough for a second New Orleans run. Three lefties would relieve Bowman out of the 51s pen, and all three struggled with control, although only Chase Huchingson would allow any more runs to score.

            This series continues Tuesday night at 7:00 PM, with Dillon Gee (6-3, 5.53 ERA) scheduled to pitch for Las Vegas.

            Las Vegas jumped ahead big early, and then barely held on for the win in the 9^th, as they took game one in New Orleans. 51s starter Seth Lugo set a new career high with 12 strikeouts, becoming just the fourth PCL pitcher to reach that mark this season (Steven Matz is one of the other 3), and shut the Zephyrs down over the first 6 innings. He was finally touched up for a run in the 7^th, but Cody Satterwhite bailed him out of a tough spot to hold a 5-1 lead. It looked like that would be more than enough as Chase Bradford took the mound in the 9^th, but 3 singles and 2 walks (one intentional) later, the Zephyrs had made it a 5-4 game, and had the bases loaded with just one out. After falling behind 2-1, Bradford induced a grounder to Eric Campbell, and he’d throw it home to start a game ending 5-2-3 double play.
