Recapish
The
Binghamton Mets won a tightly contested battle Saturday night thanks to an 8th
inning homerun off the bat of Matt Oberste, his first in Double-A. Aside from 3
batters in the 2nd inning, Mickey Jannis was very effective in this
start, but left a few batters shy of a win in this start.
The
B-Mets got multi-hit efforts from Maikis De La Cruz, Xorge Carrillo, and Jared
King. All three picked up hits in the 3rd inning, which tie the game
at 2. The Fisher Cats had jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the previous half inning
thanks to a two run bomb from K.C. Hobson.
The
game remained scoreless until the Oberste homerun, although New Hampshire
threatened in the 7th. Rowdy Tellez led off the frame with a double,
and then a Matt Dean single advanced him to 3B. Jannis would stay in to get the
next out – retribution against Hobson – but then manager Pedro Lopez went to
the B-Mets pen. Luis Mateo was the first out of the pen, and he came up huge in
the tie game. He induced a foul pop out from Wilkin Castillo for the second out
of the frame, and then a groundout from Christian Lopes to end the threat.
The
Cats threatened again in both the 8th and 9th inning, but
the B-Mets pen was able to keep them off the board. David Roseboom handled the
final two outs with two on in the 8th, striking out Tellez to end
the frame. Then Akeel Morris stranded the bases loaded in the 9th inning,
inducing a groundout to shortstop to end the game.
I
look at the important details from this game below with highlights, so enjoy!
This series wraps up Sunday afternoon at 1:35 PM, with Robert Gsellman
scheduled to pitch for the B-Mets.
Scoring Highlights
Maikis
De La Cruz started his big night with a single in the 1st inning,
but wouldn’t advance past 1B.
Xorge
Carrillo led off the 3rd with his fifth double of the year, went to
3B on a single from Jared King, and then both runners scored on Maikis’ second
hit of the night. De La Cruz would be thrown out trying to extend his hit into
a double.
Maikis
capped his night with a leadoff single in the 8th, which was the key
inning for Binghamton. Dominic Smith would walk two batters later, and then
Matt Oberste launched his first homer of the year to give the B-Mets a 5-2
lead. Victor Cruzado would add his first hit of the game in the frame, but
would be caught trying to steal 3B for the second out.
Defensive Highlights
Dom
Smith made a nice play on this grounder to the right, making a move you don’t
usually see from the first baseman – the gameday operator must’ve been tricked
by the fielding action, because he gave credit to L.J. Mazzili on the grounder.
Sometimes
you catch the ball, sometimes the ball catches you, and that was the case for
Mickey Jannis in the 6th inning.

The Strikeouts (there were camera difficulties throughout
the night)
Mickey
Jannis struck out two in the 2nd inning, but allowed 3 straight to
reach in between the K’s. Rowdy Tellez went down looking to start the frame,
and Christian Lopez struck out swinging as part of a K/CS double play.
Lopes
went down swinging against Jannis again to end the 5th inning.
Luis Mateo
Mateo
came in with one out and two in scoring position in the 7th inning, and
would strand both baserunners to keep the game tied. The B-Mets jumped ahead in
the 8th, but were at the plate for a long time, so Mateo might’ve
been cold by the time he went back out there for the 8th. That’s no
excuse for issuing a leadoff walk, but he did strikeout Melky Mesa before
departing the game with two on (they just didn’t show it).
David Roseboom
The
BOOM came in to finish the 8th against a pair of lefties. He got a
groundout from Dwight Smith Jr., and then Rowdy Tellez went down swinging to
end the frame.
Akeel Morris
Morris
had a mixed 9th inning, striking out 2 of the first 3 batters, but
then walking 2 of the final 3 batters. Matt Dean went down looking, and then
Wilkin Castilo went down swinging after a K.C. Hobson single. The next two Cats
walked to load the bases, which gave Roemon Fields a chance to be the hero at
home. Morris would win the battle though, getting a groundout to shortstop to
end the game.
