Recapish
The
Las Vegas 51s won their 5th straight game in Seth Lugo’s return from
the DL Saturday night. Brandon Nimmo and Marc Krauss stayed hot at the plate,
with each batter provided a pair of hits and RBI’s to lead the way on offense.
Lugo
had been on the DL with the past week with what Wally Backman described as a
sore forearm, which can have many meanings. His heaters were back to their
normal velocity range – 88-91 MPH for his sinker, 91-94 MPH for his four seamer
– and he had good swing-and-miss stuff – 37% Whiff/Swing is very good. He was
nearly flawless over the first 3 innings, but had to work through trouble in
the 4th and 5th innings. After
the game, Wally said that it looked like Lugo tired in those last two
frames and started elevating pitches.
Las
Vegas charged ahead in this game with a pair of runs in both the 2nd
and 3rd innings. Brandon Nimmo doubled home two in the 2nd
inning to keep his hot series going – he has 6 hits and a pair of doubles
through the first 3 games. In the 3rd inning, the first 5 Las Vegas
batters reached for a pair of runs. Travis Taijeron and Johnny Monell picked up
the RBI hits, and T.J. Rivera added another infield hit to his stat line.
Tacoma
charged back with a pair of runs against Lugo in each of the next two innings.
Lugo issued a leadoff walk to Chris Taylor in the 3rd and it came
back to burn him. Efren Navarro and Mike Zunino followed with singles to load
the bases with 0 outs. Considering the circumstances, Lugo did a good job to
get out of the inning with just 2 runs allowed, but it might’ve been one if
Daniel Muno hadn’t bobbled a grounder. Mike Baxter hit a grounder right at Muno
that might’ve started a double play, but the ball bounced up off Muno’s chest,
and he only had a play at 1B after recovering.
Daniel Robertson led off the 5th
with a bunt single down the 3B line that Ty Kelly couldn’t sling to 1B
accurately. After a sac bunt advanced him, Boog Powell and Taylor picked up
back-to-back RBI doubles to tie the game.
The
tie would not last long, however, as Marc Krauss launched his third blast of
the year in the 5th, which pushed Las Vegas ahead 7-4.
Dario
Alvarez took over for Lugo in the 6th, although he’d only be allowed
to face the lefties. Jeff Walters was up next, and he’d retire 4 straight after
walking a batter. Josh Smoker came in throwing bullets for the 8th,
and induced a pair of groundouts before striking out Mike from Whitestone to
end the frame. Paul Sewald took the 9th and worked around a pair of
singles for his second save of the year.
This
series wraps up Sunday afternoon at 3:05 PM, with Duane Below (1-0, 5.25 ERA)
scheduled to start for Las Vegas. Below is coming off a shaky
start, and will be looking to keep the 51s from falling back to .500.
