Recapish
The
B-Mets offense couldn’t figure out lefty Shawn Morimando Tuesday night in
Akron, which was problematic since starter Mickey Jannis was wild and dug them
a big hole early. Jannis left trailing 4-0, and with the B-Mets hitless against
Morimando through 4. The Indian’s #17-prospect took the no-hitter bid into the
6th inning, but Binghamton would finally get to him for a pair of
runs after he issued a one out walk in the frame. Akron would get those runs
right back and then some in the bottom half of the 6th, getting to
reliever Kelly Secrest for 3 runs, which put this game out of reach for
Binghamton.
Mickey
Jannis was missing up in this start, and when knuckleballer’s are wild up in
the zone, the other team tends to tee off. It looked like he might bounce back
to give the team some depth after a quick 2nd inning, but he just
didn’t have the command he needs. The thing to watch with Jannis is how often
he can bring the command like last week when he flirted with a no-hitter, as
opposed to the wild stinker he put up Tuesday night.
Morimando
was excellent for Akron until seemingly hitting a wall in the 6th. He
also lost command for a couple of batters in the 3rd, but was
otherwise perfect. His changeup was excellent as advertised, and he threw a few
nice sliders too. Eric Stamets and Todd Hankins went deep for Akron, and half of the teams 10 hits went for extra bases (2 2B, 3B, 2 HR).
I
look at the few B-Mets highlights and a couple of Akron highlights below, so
enjoy. This series wraps up in Akron Wednesday night at 6:35 PM, with Robert
Gsellman scheduled to start for Binghamton.
Scoring Highlights
Both
Binghamton hits came in the 6th inning. After Maikis De La Cruz drew
a one out walk, L.J. Mazzili tripled him home. Derrik Gibson followed with an RBI
single to RF that made it a 4-2 game.
Clint
Frazier added a double for the second straight day against B-Mets pitching.
Defensive Highlights
Bradley
Zimmer made a great slidingish catch to rob L.J. Mazzilli of a single leading off the game.
Not
the most challenging play to field at 1B, but an example of Dominic Smith in
the field nonetheless.

First pitch strike to 10/20 batters faced (50%)
He’d
strike out Lonnie Chisenhall to end his night in the 4th inning.
David Roseboom’s strikeout of Todd Hankins:
Shawn Morimando
Morimando
retired the first 7 B-Mets batters before issuing a leadoff walk to Stefan
Sabol in the 3rd inning. He struck out Dominic Smith and Maikis De
La Cruz over the first 3 innings.
After
the walk, he retired 10 straight before issuing a second walk, this one to
Maikis De La Cruz in the 6th inning. Along the way he added another
strikeout of Smith in the 4th, and then finished the 5th
with a strikeout of Sabol. Mazzilli and Gibson followed the Maikis walk with
the only B-Mets hits of the game, which knocked Morimando out of the game.
