Recapish
There
was a lot of Mets related news to come out of St. Lucie Tuesday night, plus the
Mets played a baseball. Of most interest to Mets fans was news that Jacob
deGrom’s newborn son is fine, and that he then threw a simulated game against
minor leaguers today. Josh Edgin also made his fourth rehab appearance of the
year, starting the game with a perfect 1st that including a
strikeout, pop out, and groundout. The Mets looked good over the first 4
innings, and held a 3-0 lead at that point, but Charlotte would take advantage
of 4 St. Lucie errors over the final 5 frames to jump ahead for the win.
“[Jacob deGrom] threw 71 pitches (48 strikes) today in his
simulated game… Against the extended players, 6 innings, one hit – had a
no-hitter through 5 – no runs, no walks, 10 strikeouts, but he did plunk a
batter… Velocity up to 92-94 consistently.”
The
stadium gun has been wonky early in the season, and it wasn’t working while
Edgin was pitching… again. Radio host Adam MacDonald did share this following
bit of information from his last start, “Sitting dead behind home plate in
Dodgertown, [Edgin’s] slider had a lot of movement – his best pitch against the
Manatees.” Not sure about his velocity, but his results have been encouraging
so far. He has 4 K: 1 BB with just 2 hits allowed in 3 IP, and he’s thrown 15
of 19 pitches for strikes over his last 3 outings.
Amed
Rosario sparked the St. Lucie Mets only scoring frame with a leadoff triple in
the 4th – his league best fourth triple of the year. Michael Katz
would single him home, and then went to 3B on a Tomas Nido double to RF two
batters later. Wuilmer Becerra doubled them both home, which gave St. Lucie a
3-0 lead at the time.
The
Manatees got all 3 runs right back in an inning that could’ve been worse, but
also could’ve ended much better. The first 3 batters reached on singles to load
the bases, but a lineout to Michael Katz led to a double play, so Prevost had a
chance to escape unscored upon. Unfortunately, Alec Sole singled to RF to knock
in two Charlotte runs, and then Riley Unroe doubled him home to tie the game.
In
the 8th, Cade Gotta reached on a grounder to shortstop to spark the
winning run – gameday has it labeled a throwing error, but radio called it an
infield single. The Mets would bring in Alberto Baldonado with one out in the
frame, but Nick Ciuffo greeted him with an RBI double to put the Manatees ahead
for good.
This
series continues in St. Lucie Wednesday night at 6:30 PM, with Chris Flexen
scheduled to take the hill. Check out some highlights posted to twitter below,
as well as pitch log info and a more detailed play-by-play for Edgin and
Prevost at the bottom. Gameday was acting up during the game, and currently does
not have pitch info posted.
