Recapish

The St. Lucie Mets squeaked out a 2-1 win over the Charlotte Stone Crabs Wednesday night behind a second straight great effort from Josh Prevost. St. Lucie led 1-0 most of the game, but the teams took turns scratching out a run in the 7th before the Mets pen shut things down for the final two frames. Since they aren’t on MiLB.tv, I don’t normally cover St. Lucie Mets games without a good reason, so be sure to check out the iscore log included at the bottom!
For Prevost, he’s now allowed just 2 R over his last 13.1 IP, thanks largely to a nearly 60% groundball rate on balls in play over his last two starts – he’s at 53% for the season. He’s mostly a sinker-slider pitcher, though he added in a few changeups later in the start.

Recapish

There was a lot of Mets related news to come out of St. Lucie Tuesday night, plus the Mets played a baseball. Of most interest to Mets fans was news that Jacob deGrom’s newborn son is fine, and that he then threw a simulated game against minor leaguers today. Josh Edgin also made his fourth rehab appearance of the year, starting the game with a perfect 1st that including a strikeout, pop out, and groundout. The Mets looked good over the first 4 innings, and held a 3-0 lead at that point, but Charlotte would take advantage of 4 St. Lucie errors over the final 5 frames to jump ahead for the win.
First up, the radio provided some notes on deGrom’s simulated game:

Recap

It was only 5 pitches, but Josh Edgin took another step back towards the majors with a second successful rehab appearance in St. Lucie Wednesday night. Edgin made his first appearance starting Sunday’s game, when he threw 27 pitches but couldn’t get out of the 1st inning. This time he needed just 5 pitches to work through 3 batters, and he helped St. Lucie get through the 6th – although he did allow an inherited runner to score. The game had been a laugher since the 1st inning, when St. Lucie sent 12 batters to the plate, and only 2 of the 9 players failed to reach at least once. The Dunedin bullpen did a great job picking up starter Tom Robson, who only last 0.2 IP, but their offense never got anything going against Josh Prevost, and then Ben Griset was perfect over the final 3 innings for a long save.

2015 Splits in Review: Josh Prevost

Josh Prevost, Sand Gnats, 2015

RH SP, 24

2015 with Savannah: 12 GS, 74.1 IP, 4.60 RA/3.75 ERA/3.70 FIP/3.92 xFIP, 79 H, 38 R (31 ER), 46 K: 18 BB (14.5 K%: 5.7 BB%), .268/.321/.385, .309 BABIP, .117 ISO, 65.4 LOB%, 0.36 HR/9, 99 ERA-/97 FIP-/103 xFIP-, 105 wRC+, 52.5 GB%: 22.5 FB%: 20.5 LD%: 4.5 PU%, 1.10 GO/AO, 5.5% HR/FB

The Mets drafted the 6’8” Josh Prevost out of Seton Hall with their 5th round pick in the 2014 draft because he was a senior sign with a projectable sinker. They sent him straight to Brooklyn, where he got acclimated to the minors in the Cyclones pen over 11 strong appearances. Prevost’s success was rewarded with a rotation spot in Savannah coming out of Spring Training, but a late May injury kept him out of the rotation for two months. The team never announced anything about the injury last year, but I finally read it was shoulder tendinitis back in December – “They were babying it, but that was probably better in the long run,” said Prevost. The timing couldn’t have been worse either, as he had allowed just 3 ER over his previous 21 IP, with 12 K: 2 BB and 21 H allowed during that 3 start span. He would come back and win all 4 of his decisions down the stretch with Savannah (in 5 starts), but the missed time was unfortunate for someone already behind the ball some due to his age. Below I look at some of the trends in Prevost’s splits from 2015 as I discuss what I saw from him, and then share GIF’s from the 3 starts I caught on MiLB.tv.

Recap

The Savannah Sand Gnats jumped out early in this game, and then the Drive spent the rest of the game slowly coming back until the 9th, when Andrew Benintendi ended the game with a walkoff blast to RF. The Sand Gnats jumped all over Greenville starter Luis Ramos in the 1st inning, knocking him out of the game before Prevost ever took the mound. Savannah starter Josh Prevost was pretty effective in this start, but he was limited to 5 innings after needing 30 pitches to get through the 2nd inning. His heavy sinker looked nice, and he had a good feel for his changeup. Tim Peterson and Alex Palsha each threw a scoreless inning of relief for Savannah – it was Palsha’s SAL debut – but the Drive scored a pair of runs against both lefty relievers Ben Griset and Alberto Baldonado. For Greenville, it was the 3-4 combo of Rafael Devers and Andrew Benintendi that were the drivers behind the comeback. They combined to go 5-9 with 2 2B’s, 4 runs scored, and the walkoff blast. But it was the great efforts out of the pen from Carlos Pinales and Kuehl McEachern that even gave those two Drive batters a chance to win the game for Greenville.
This series continues Friday night at 7:05 PM, with Martires Arias (7-5, 2.43 ERA) scheduled to pitch opposite Ben Taylor (0-2, 3.40 ERA). I have included as many highlights from this game as possible, but if there are moments missing (like an RBI single from Natanael Ramos in the first), it’s because the Drive broadcast is terrible. They have the cameras, but then someone will decide to show us viewers a runner standing around at 3B while Josh Prevost strikes somebody out (that’s just one of many examples I could give from this game).
