Recapish

The Columbia Fireflies got a top-notch performance from big Chris Viall Monday night in Greenville as they cruised to a 7-1 win in the opener of their series with the Drive. Viall set a career-high with 11 strikeouts over five innings of work and barely let the Drive hit the ball out of the infield. He randomly experienced some control problems in the 4^th as the Drive tried to put together a rally, but then Viall buckled down and struck out five of six batters to end his night on a high note. Edgardo Fermin led the Fireflies offensively, finishing with three hits, three runs scored, a double, a stolen base, and his second walk of the season. Although Fermin had the biggest night, everyone in the Fireflies lineup reached base at least once, and the team as a whole walked more times (8) than they struck out (7).

Recapish

The Columbia Fireflies took the opener of a three-game series with the Hagerstown Suns 8-3 at home Monday night. The Cola bats had their best night of the season so far, connecting for those eight runs on 16 hits, including five doubles and a homerun. Meanwhile, big (6’9) Chris Viall made his full-season debut for Columbia and struck out six over four strong innings of work. He had to leave early due to the early season pitch count limits and a couple of long frames on the mound, but the Cola pen was more than up for the extra work. Nicolas Debora earned his first Cola win with two scoreless, and then Joshua Payne and Trey Cobb wrapped things up over the final three frames.
