            The Columbia Fireflies rode a great start from lefty Anthony Kay to a 5-0 win Sunday afternoon in South Carolina, which forced a series split with the Hickory Crawdads. Kay allowed just three singles over six scoreless to lower his ERA to a paltry 1.69 and earn his first professional win. Cola relievers Carlos Hernandez and Trey Cobb then combined to face the minimum over the final three innings as they held on to the first Fireflies shutout of 2018. After a quiet game Saturday, the Cola offense was at it again Sunday, with all but one batter reaching base for the Fireflies, and that batter (Quinn Brodey) had an RBI to help the cause anyway.

            The Columbia Fireflies beat Hickory 6-3 at home Friday night to even their four game series with the Crawdads. Cola starter Joe Cavallaro turned in his third straight strong outing to start the season, striking out six and limited the Crawdads to just two hits and two walks over the first six innings Friday. The Fireflies offense stayed hot with another on base party, as everyone in the lineup reached base at least once, which is something they did multiple times in Greenville.

            The Columbia Fireflies had their four-game winning streak snapped Thursday at home as they opened a four-game set with the Hickory Crawdads. Hickory scored ten runs against Cola starter Tony Dibrell and never looked back in a 10-5 win, which dropped the Fireflies record to 9-5. The Cola offense stayed on track but couldn’t match the ten-run effort from Hickory. Eight of the nine Cola batters reached base at least once, with catcher Scott Manea the only one missing out on the on-base party – the first time in 8 starts that he’s failed to reach base at least once. The Cola pen did a great job in relief of Dibrell, combining for 4.2 scoreless innings, but the Hickory pen nearly matched them zero-for-zero as the Crawdads held onto their big lead.

            The Columbia Fireflies won their second straight in Greenville Tuesday night, scoring 7 runs for a second straight game to top the Drive 7-5. Cola starter Marcel Renteria struck out a career-high seven batters over 5.1 IP (also a career-high) while issuing just one walk to earn the win. Greenville battled back some against the Cola pen late, but the Fireflies held on to improve to 8-4 this year. Offensively, Cola batter reached base at least once for the second straight, plus Blake Tiberi, Quinn Brodey, and Giovanny Alfonzo had multi-hit efforts.
