Recap
After
multiple lead changes over the first 4.5 innings, the Binghamton Mets would
explode for 6 runs in the 5th inning Thursday night, giving them a
big lead that the pen would hold. B-Mets starter Tyler Pill was
uncharacteristically wild against New Hampshire, but he limited the damage to
just a run in the 1st inning (when he walked 3) and a pair of two
outs runs in the 5th inning (when he walked one batter and hit
another). After the Cats re-took the lead at 3-2 in the top of the 5th
inning, Binghamton would bat around for 6 runs in the bottom of the frame,
although they hardly had to work for the runs, as there were 3 walks and 2 New
Hampshire errors against only 2 singles. Erik Goeddel was the first to relieve
Pill in the 6th inning, and he’d quickly retire the first two
batters before running into some trouble. He hit 96 MPH on the gun, and
probably gets out of the frame unharmed with a proper SS, but he did issue a
two out walk before the two RBI singles (the first RBI single barely squeaked
through, and Cecchini has made that play to his left all year). Goeddel would
be asked to come into the 7th for one out, but then left after
facing a batter – I’m not sure if pitching multiple innings was one of his
final tests, or maybe he had a pitch limit for the game that he wanted to reach
in-game action, but it seems odd to bring him in for one out otherwise. Beck
Wheeler, Josh Smoker, and Paul Sewald would combine for another 2.2 scoreless
innings of relief after Goeddel, with Sewald striking out the final two batters
of the game.
This
series continues Friday night at 7:05 PM, with Matt Koch (4-8, 3.76 ERA)
scheduled to face off against Taylor Cole (6-10, 4.45 ERA), who held the B-Mets
to just 2 runs over 8 IP in his last start.
The
Fisher Cats had a wild Tyler Pill against the ropes in the 1st
inning, loading the bases with one out, and then re-loading the bases after a
sac fly from K.C. Hobson gave them a 1-0 lead. But Pill prevented any further
damage after his third walk of the inning re-loaded the bases, inducing a
groundout to SS for the final out of the 1st.
Jonathan
Galvez hit a one out single to CF in the 2nd inning, and then Xorge
Carrillo followed with his 8th blast of the year, which gave
Binghamton a 2-1 lead.
Dwight
Smith Jr. helped the Fisher Cats re-take the lead in the 5th with a
leadoff double. After the double, Pill struck out Melky Mesa, hit Ryan Schimpf
with a pitch, struck out Hobson, and then walked Derrick Chung to load the
bases with two outs. Emilio Guerrero followed with a 2R single to shallow RF that
deflected off of Mazzilli’s glove to give the Cats a 3-2 lead – the B-Mets
would initially have Guerrero caught in a rundown, and then Chung was thrown
out trying to score on the play, which prevented further damage in the frame.
A
pair of one out walks and an error in the bottom of the 5th loaded
the bases for Josh Rodriguez, and he singled home 2 to give the B-Mets a 4-3
lead. After a walk re-loaded the bases for Binghamton, Vince Belnome hit a fly
ball to left center field that would fall in as the outfielders collided, and
Belnome would get credit for a sac fly as two runs came home on the play.
Jonathan Galvez was the 9th B-Mets batter the bat in the frame, and
he would come through with a two run single into CF for an 8-3 lead.
With
Erik Goeddel now on the mound in the 6th, New Hampshire put together
a two run rally with two outs. Roemon Fields started the rally with a single to
CF. After a walk to Smith, Mesa and Schimpf followed with RBI singles to CF.
The
B-Mets would tack on one more run in the 8th, when T.J. Rivera
singled home Xorge Carrillo after a pair of leadoff walks in the frame.
