Recapish

The Columbia Fireflies beat Hickory 6-3 at home Friday night to even their four game series with the Crawdads. Cola starter Joe Cavallaro turned in his third straight strong outing to start the season, striking out six and limited the Crawdads to just two hits and two walks over the first six innings Friday. The Fireflies offense stayed hot with another on base party, as everyone in the lineup reached base at least once, which is something they did multiple times in Greenville.

Recapish

The Columbia Fireflies battled back from an early hole Friday night to remain undefeated at 2-0 in the 2018 season. Cola starter Joe Cavallaro ran into some 1st inning trouble, which led to two runs for Augusta, but he shut the Green Jackets down the rest of the way. Jackets starter Garrett Cave kept the Cola bats in check for the first five innings, but the Augusta pen struggled mightily when they took over in the 6th. The first Jackets reliever, Camilo Doval, walked all four batters he faced and that opened the door for a six-run Cola rally that turned this game from a nail-biter into a laugher. Firefly relievers Joshua Payne and Darwin Ramos finished things off for Columbia with three straight scoreless innings to seal a 7-2 win.

Kingsport Mets: 2017 Season In Review

Taking a closer look at how the Kingsport Mets finished the season with a 29-37 record but just 3.5 games out of a playoff spot

What Happened

Kingsport has long been a staple of the Mets farm system, offering New York a Rookie ball squad in the Appalachian League for all but one season since 1980 (stadium renovations in 1983 forced the Mets to the GCL for a season). And Kingsport has been the first minor league stop for some of the best talent to come out of the Mets system: from Darryl Strawberry and Dwight Gooden in the early 1980’s to Jose Reyes and David Wright in the early 2000’s. While it’s unreasonable to expect any rookie ball player to reach the peaks those Mets legends reached, there were plenty of interesting Mets prospects playing in Kingsport last year that could be ready to put their name on the prospect map in 2018.
The 2017 Kingsport Mets started the season with a 3-game winning streak, but those good feels quickly went away as they went on to lose 8 straight after that. The long losing streaks became a recurring problem for Kingsport, as they would go on to lose 8 of their final 11 games in July and then 8 of their final 10 games in August. So, what happened?
