Recapish

The Binghamton Rumble Ponies took a 5-2 loss in their rubber-match with the New Hampshire Fisher Cats Thursday afternoon to fall to 4-7 in 2018. Ponies starter Andrew Church did a commendable job against a tough Eastern League lineup, but the Ponies offense stayed quiet in New Hampshire. Entering the series, the focus for Binghamton was on the big boppers at the top of the Cats lineup, but it was the New Hampshire pitching that had a bigger impact. Every game was close, but Binghamton managed to score just 10 runs over the three games series, so it was tough to win even if the Ponies pitchers were holding Bo Bichette and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. mostly in check – they combined to go 5-20. Fisher Cats starter Jordan Romano was in control from the get go in this one, and he outdueled Church over seven innings, allowing just one run on two hits.

Recapish

The Binghamton Rumble Ponies dropped the opener of their weekend series in Portland 4-2 to the Sea Dogs Friday night. After a strong first outing, Ponies starter Andrew Church struggled in his second straight start against this Portland team, finishing with zero strikeouts and few swinging strikes over his four innings of work. Given his limited Double-A experience, it’s not surprising that Portland was able to adjust and do better against Church this time around. And although it was by no means a good start, Church was able to do a good job of limiting the damage while out there even though he was struggling. On most nights, four runs wouldn’t be too big of a lead to overcome, but the Ponies were facing a major league rehabber on this night, and Sea Dogs starter Drew Pomeranz knew how to protect his lead.

Recapish

After a rainout Friday night, the Binghamton Rumble Ponies got back to their winning ways Saturday against the Sea Dogs. Rumble Ponies starter Andrew Church was generally effective, though not really efficient, in his first start of the year, faring much better than he did in his one previous Double-A start (when he allowed 10 earned runs). Church was backed by three big doubles and a very effective Binghamton bullpen en route to a 5-3 win for the Ponies. Peter Alonso had one of those doubles and Tomas Nido had the other two, along with 3 RBI’s for his biggest game so far in 2018. Eric Hanhold got the win in his Mets organizational debut and Corey Taylor earned the save in his first opportunity of 2018.
