Recap
Gabriel
Ynoa had his slider working early for the B-Mets, and Gavin Cecchini capped a
two-out rally in the 6th inning to give Binghamton a 2-1 win in the
opener against the Fisher Cats. Ynoa recorded the first five outs via the
strikeout, but New Hampshire put two balls in play for extra bases during that
span, including a solo homer with two outs in the 1st. Despite the good
results, it was an uneven outing for Ynoa due to the late walks – after only
one walk allowed through the first 4.1 IP, he’d issue 3 free passes over the
final 1.2 IP (7 batters). New Hampshire starter Matt Boyd cruised through his
5.1 IP, allowing only 4 singles, although the B-Mets did hit a few deep fly
outs against him. Considering he had only thrown 81 pitches and there was
nobody on base in the 6th, it was surprising to see Boyd removed,
but the B-Mets sure didn’t mind, as they’d jump on his replacement for both of
their runs. It’s possible that the Cats manager didn’t want the lefty Boyd
facing some tough right handed hitters due up with the game so close, but if
so, that plan backfired. Chase Huchingson and Paul Sewald did a great job
closing the game out, combining to allow only one base runner over the final 3
innings. Sewald is now the Binghamton closer, with Jon Velasquez promoted to
the role of 51s closer earlier in the day.
For
Ynoa, there were a lot of positives from this start, as his slider was getting
swinging strikes throughout the game, and the announcer had his fastball
hitting as high as 96 MPH in the 4th. Considering the middling
reviews from his last start, it sounds like his fastball warmed up with the
temperature – it was a brisk 45˚ F with 17 MPH winds when he took the mound for
that start in New Hampshire, and up to a sizzling 58˚ F with a nice 5 MPH
breeze for his start Friday night. Unfortunately, even though his heater topped
out higher in this start, he still didn’t have much command of the pitch, and
he ended up going to his secondaries in several fastball counts. It’s a start
Ynoa can build on, and he’s still just a 21-year old having mixed success in AA,
so just be patient with him for now.
Binghamton
sends righty Luis Cessa to the mound for game two of this series, which is
scheduled for Saturday afternoon at 1:05 PM, as they look to make it 6-straight
wins.
Aderlin Rodriguez hit a two-out single in the 1st, which moved Josh Rodriguez to 3B, but the B-Mets couldn't capitalize on the threat. Brandon
Nimmo picked up a two-out single off the tough lefty Boyd in the 3rd.
J-Rod got the 6th inning rally started with a one out single
into LF. After an Aderlin Rodriguez groundout moved J-Rod to 2B, Dustin Lawley
turn on an inside fastball to bring him home with an RBI double into the LF
corner. Eudy Pina would keep the two-out rally going by reaching on an infield
single to 3B, which put runners on the corners for Gavin Cecchini. Cheech would
hit a chopper that found a hole on the left side to bring home Dustin Lawley and
make it a 2-1 B-Mets lead.
