Recapish

Dilson Herrera and the Las Vegas 51s made a laugher out of their Tuesday afternoon affair in El Paso, combining for 15 runs on 17 hits, including 10 extra base hits and 4 homeruns. The 51s jumped ahead quickly and could hardly be slowed down Tuesday. El Paso briefly made it a close game when Sean Gilmartin struggled to close out the 5th inning, but Dilson Herrera exploded over the final 3 innings. He tripled and scored in the 7th, and then homered in both the 8th and 9th innings.
Sean Gilmartin made only one mistake over the first 4 innings, allowing a one out triple to Jose Pirela, who came around to score. The 5th inning did not go as smoothly for Gilmartin. After uncorking a wild pitch, he allowed a 2R HR to Diego Goris, and then a triple to a pinch hitting pitcher. El Paso made it a 6-5 game when they got a run off of Zach Thornton in the 6th inning, but the 51s pen shut them down after that.
I take a closer look at the scoring details with highlights below, so enjoy. This series continues Wednesday night at 8:35 PM, with Rafael Montero (1-0, 3.86 ERA) scheduled to pitch for Las Vegas.

Scoring Highlights

Dilson Herrera’s huge game started with a leadoff single in the 1st inning. He’d steal 2B and come around to score on an RBI single hit back up the middle off the bat of T.J. Rivera. Travis Taijeron doubled the 51s lead with a long double to RF, but he was thrown out trying to extend the hit into a triple – right fielder Hunter Renfroe showed off a gun to surprise everyone and get him at 3B.

Taijeron and Gavin Cecchini picked up singles in the 4th inning and Nevin Ashley doubled them home to again double the lead, this time making it a 4-0 game.

Brandon Nimmo and T.J. Rivera smacked the ball to either side of the field in the 5th: Nimmo’s bounced off the RF warning track for a double, and Rivera’s bounced off the blue wall beyond LF for a HR.

Dilson hit a one out triple off the top of the LF wall in the 7th and then scored on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Nimmo.

After the first two 51s were retired in the 8th, Cecchini and Ty Kelly singled to keep the inning alive, and Johnny Monell reached on an E4 to bring home a run. Dilson capped the scoring for the frame with a long 3R HR to left center field – his first of the game. Nimmo would add a single in the frame.

The 51s continued to put on a power display in the 9th. Travis Taijeron led off the frame with a laser blasted out to RF for his third hit of the game. Cecchini added a third hit when he doubled two batters later. Cecchini came home on Monell’s third double of the year, which opened the door for Dilson to hit for the cycle. Needing just a double for the cycle, Dilson instead decided to launch his second homerun in as many innings.

Defensive Highlights

Gavin Cecchini and Dilson Herrera were busy in this game, but neither did anything too flashy. Here’s a nice view of Cecchini handling a grounder in the 1st, and then starting a double play in the 2nd.
