Recap

The Las Vegas 51s spoiled a great chance to gain some breathing room on the El Paso Chihuahuas Wednesday night, managing only one run on three behind another strong start from Tim Stauffer, and losing in extra’s. Stauffer has been a great veteran presence in the 51s rotation, offering Las Vegas a high number of quality innings pitched with nearly every start. Unfortunately for Stauffer and the 51s, El Paso starter Chris Smith was even better on this night, allowing only 5 base runners in his 6.2 IP, with only a run on the bomb from Travis Taijeron. With the loss, the 51s lead over El Paso dropped to just a half game with one series left for each team after they wrap this series up Thursday night.

Recap

Although they wouldn’t find out until a hour or so after their game ended, the Binghamton Mets win over Reading combined with the Trenton Thunder’s eventual loss means that the B-Mets are heading to the Eastern League playoffs for a third straight season. Binghamton absolutely walloped Reading Wednesday night in baseball town, scoring a run in each of the first 6 frames en route to a 16-4 victory. It marked the 10th time in Binghamton history that they scored at least 16 runs in a game, and the first time since they scored 17 back on 6/8/2008. B-Mets starter Tyler Pill not only gave Binghamton 7 strong innings on the mound, he also went 3-5 with a double at the plate – he had the same number of hits as Reading after 5.5 innings were in the books.
This game was one-sided from the start and full of offense, so I’ll let the highlights below tell the story instead of boring you with more words now. This series wraps up Thursday at 6:35, with Mickey Jannis (0-1, 5.06 ERA) scheduled to face Ethan Martin (3-0, 3.40 ERA).
Since they were on the road, the B-Mets did not have any champagne or celebrations ready for when Trenton lost, so they will just have to celebrate when they get home Friday (and I’d guess the B-Mets booster club will be waiting for when they do!). I’m guessing nobody is happier about them not celebrating than the Reading clubhouse manager, because that would’ve been 2 clubhouse celebrations within one 4-game series (Reading officially clinched Monday night).

Initial Mets AFL Selections

Reviewing the three prospects that will be representing the Mets this fall in Arizona.

The initial Arizona Fall League rosters were announced on Tuesday, and three Mets prospects have been rewarded with a chance to play in the league so far. Infielder Jeff McNeil of the St. Lucie Mets, and pitchers Beck Wheeler and Mickey Jannis of the Binghamton Mets will play with the Salt River Rafters, who are due to be managed by Tripp Keister. The AFL is typically a place were teams send their highly regarded prospects for some more game action, and this year 9 of MLB.com’s Top-100 prospects are currently heading there. However, while this Mets trio may reach the Mets someday, they are far from being the most highly regarded prospects within the system, so let’s review them below.

Mets Minors Transactions, August 26 – September 1, 2015

Keeping track of recent minor transactions within the Mets system

8/30 – The Mets traded minor league pitchers Miller Diaz and Matt Koch to Arizona for RP Addison Reed. Wilfredo Tovar was recalled and placed on the 60-day DL.

8/31 – Daniel Muno was outrighted to Las Vegas (and off the 40-man roster), and Logan Verrett was optioned to Las Vegas to make room for Addison Reed on the Mets roster.

9/1 – Kirk Nieuwenhuis, Bobby Parnell, and Steven Matz were activated from the 15-day DL. Erik Goeddel was activated from the 60-day DL. Eric Young Jr. had his contract selected from Las Vegas. Eric Campbell and Kevin Plawecki were recalled from Las Vegas. Vic Black was outrighted to Las Vegas (and off the 40-man roster).

8/26 – Darin Gorski was activated off the temporary inactive list, and Jayce Boyd was placed on the 7-day DL in his place.

8/29 – Darrell Ceciliani was placed on the 7-day DL with what appeared to be a pulled hamstring, and Brooks Conrad was activated off the DL in his place.

8/30 – Wilfredo Tovar was recalled to be placed on the 60-day DL – it’s like a $100K bonus for Tovar, who might’ve separated his shoulder diving on a play to his left a few weeks ago.

8/31 – Dillon Gee was placed on the temporary inactive list, and Zach Lutz was activated off the 7-day DL. Daniel Muno was outrighted off the Mets roster, and Logan Verrett was optioned back to Las Vegas.

9/1 – Chasen Bradford was activated off the 7-day DL, and Jeff Glenn was assigned to the 51s as an emergency catcher option. Kevin Plawecki and Eric Campbell were recalled to the Mets. Eric Young Jr. had his contract selected by the Mets. Vic Black was outrighted off the Mets roster.

Recap

The Las Vegas 51s picked up a much needed win Tuesday night against El Paso, holding off a late comeback from the Chihuahua’s to increase their divisioin lead back to 1.5 games. Logan Verrett made the start for Las Vegas and held El Paso to just 3 runs over the first 6 innings, but the last batter he faced launched a three run bomb to make this game interesting again. El Paso starter Jason Lane is no stranger to most of the Las Vegas lineup, as the 51s have had his number since he reached the PCL as a pitcher, and that did not change Tuesday night. The 51s would build a 6-3 lead against Lane through his 4 innings, and it seemed like this game would finish quietly after they added two mores runs against Jerry Sullivan in the 6th, but the Chihuahua’s proved feistier than that.
