Recap

The 51s and Aces played a tight back-and-forth battle Saturday night, but Reno would strike last, charging ahead thanks to a three run 8th inning. Las Vegas jumped ahead three times over the first four innings, but Cessa couldn’t hold any of those leads, as his AAA struggles continued. The 51s offense had a solid attack, getting two more bombs from Travis Taijeron (he leads the team with 17), but going only 2-9 with RISP. John Church worked a perfect 7th in relief of Cessa, but then struggled in the 8th, eventually giving way to Chase Huchingson. Huch came into a tie game, but allowed both inherited runners to score, and the Aces a comfortable three run lead. The 51s would get two runners on with one out in the 9th to bring the tying runs to the plate, but Brooks Conrad and Zach Lutz struck out swinging to end the game.
The Reno Aces hit Cessa pretty hard Saturday night, with four of the seven hits against him going for extra bases (two homeruns and two doubles). The 51s jumped ahead with a run in the 1st (see below for details and highlights), but then Nick Evans launched a solo blast off Cessa with two outs in bottom of the 1st inning to tie the game. After Las Vegas took another lead in the top of the 2nd inning, Danny Worth launched a two run bomb to RF in the 2nd that gave the Aces their first lead. Cessa would retire 8 of the next 9 Reno batters as the 51s took a 4-3 lead, but then three straight hits with one out in the 5th allowed Reno to regain the lead again.
Wally Backman inserted Cory Vaughn into the 2-hole for Las Vegas, and he had a big game at the plate in response, with all of his hits coming at big moments – his 1st inning single moved Dislon to 3B, he tied the game with an RBI single in the 7th, and his double in the 9th put runners on 2B and 3B with one out, although the 51s couldn’t tie it. After Vaughn’s RBI single got Cessa off the hook in the 7th, this game was back to square one, but the Aces would strike last with 3 in the 8th off of Church and Huch. With two outs in the frame, Peter O’ Brien and Danny Worth reached on consecutive singles, so Wally went to Huchingson, but Huch would allow a pair of singles and a wild pitch after coming in, and three Reno runs crossed the plate.
This series continues Sunday night at 9 PM, with Matthew Bowman (7-10, 5.05 ERA) scheduled to pitch for the 51s.

Recap

The Fresno Grizzlies jumped out to a big lead against Luis Cessa Monday night, while the Las Vegas never really got going against Brett Oberholtzer, which led to a third straight loss for the 51s. Cessa was wild early and then hit hard in the 3rd, as the Grizzlies jumped out to a 7-1 lead that knocked him out after 3 IP. The 51s activated Tyler Pill before the game, and he was effectively wild in his first appearance since 6/29. Chase Huchingson and Vic Black both allowed a run out of the 51s pen after Pill went 3 innings, but the game had felt over long before either entered.

Recap

Luis Cessa bounced back from a rough start in his PCL debut to overwhelm the Bee’s in the first game of their double-header Thursday night. Cessa just got better as the game wore on, mixing in his breaking ball and changeup more after establishing the fastball early (check out the pitch log below for more details). Las Vegas gave him an early lead, and he protected it well into the 6th, but some shoddy defense behind him opened the door for a big inning after Chase Bradford took over. The 51s would bounce back to take the lead in the bottom of the 6th, and then Chase Huchingson would come out of the pen to bail out Bradford in the 7th, which earned him his first PCL save.

Who’s Next? The Top Pitching Prospects Left in the System, #3 - Luis Cessa

Image from MiLB

Re-ranking the Top starting pitchers within the Mets farm system now that Steven Matz and Noah Syndergaard have graduated.

Coming into the 2015 season, the Mets farm system was a consensus Top-5 system in the majors thanks to some high-end talent at the top, but they’ve graduated several top prospects, including their top-2 starting pitching prospects, and figure to take a hit in those rankings this offseason. That’s not a bad thing though, because it means that the Mets are starting to improve from within, which is the purpose of a farm system. Also, it means that the door is open for the next crop of prospects to emerge, and the Mets still have some starting pitching prospects with major league upside worth keeping an eye on.

Recap

Luis Cessa was on top of his game Sunday afternoon in Akron, and Gavin Cecchini provided the jolt the B-Mets needed in the 5th, as Binghamton ended a 4-game losing streak. Cessa was extremely sharp throughout the start, only topping 15 pitches in an inning once, and needing only 4 pitches during a perfect 5th, shutting the Rubber Ducks down after being given a lead. Cessa likely could’ve kept the shutout going through the 8th, if not the 9th, but after Ynoa went the distance during Saturday’s loss, manager Pedro Lopez likely wanted to get the bullpen some work. Matt Koch worked a perfect 8th, and Paul Sewald allowed a 2 out solo blast in the 9th to end the shutout bid.
