Recapish

The Fireflies lost another tight battle with the Charleston River Dogs Sunday evening at the Joe, dropping the finale 4-3 to fall one game under .500. Cola starter Chase Ingram was a little wild in the 5th, which opened the door for a 3-run River Dogs rally that was the game decider. Patrick Mazeika stayed hot at the plate, picking up a pair of singles and driving in the first two Columbia runs.
Ingram induced a high number of swinging strikes using mostly his heater and curve against Charleston Sunday, but walks have now been an issue in 3 of his last 4 starts. Both walks issued in the 5th inning came around to score, and that was the deciding inning. The Dogs scored their first run of the game in the 2nd, when Jhalan Jackson launched a fastball down the middle to LF.

Recapish

The Fireflies wild first week in Charleston continued Sunday evening, as the RiverDogs walked off with a 9th inning win for the third time in 4 games. Fireflies starter Kevin Canelon was very sharp over the first 3 innings, but ran out of steam a little during the 4th, allowing a pair of runs on 3 straight doubles. RiverDogs starter Simon De la Rosa showed off an impressive slider in the 1st inning, but his stuff wasn’t as good when he went out for the 2nd, and the Fireflies would tag him for two runs to jump ahead for the 4th time in this series. This game came down to a battle of the bullpens, and while Witt Haggard would have a redemptive 8th inning, he ended up taking his second loss of the season when he lost the zone to start the 9th.

Recap

The Fireflies were involved in another walkoff Friday night, and since both of their games this year have come on the road, that’s not a good thing. The Fireflies got a strong start from lefty P.J. Conlon, but couldn’t pull away against RiverDogs starter Will Carter. Carter allowed four straight two out singles in the 1st, but was otherwise in control, racking up 7 K’s over his 5 innings. The RiverDogs bullpen came in and did a great job behind Will Carter, while Christian Montgomery came in for the Fireflies and struggled with command throughout his 1.1 IP. Columbia would pull even when Charleston reliever Anyelo Gomez tired in the top of the 9th, but then Witt Haggard quickly gave the lead back in the bottom of the 9th.

Recap:

It was a bittersweet victory Monday night for the Brooklyn Cyclones, as they watched the Lowell Spinners come up just short in their 2 out, 9th inning comeback attempt against the Connecticut Tigers. With the victory, the Tigers find themselves going to the NYPL playoffs as the Wild Card representative, a spot the Cyclones were in control of heading into the final week. If the Cyclones had managed just one victory against Tri-City last week (or against the Tigers at any point), they would have controlled their destiny heading into the final day of the season, but instead it was the Tigers who had that luxury, and this time they made it count.
Casey Meisner was great over his five innings Monday night, getting ahead in the count often (first-pitch strikes to 13/18 batters), and staying economical with his pitch count. He couldn’t continue his double-digit strikeout streak going, but that may have been a consequence of pitching on the last day of the season. As with the Sand Gnats game in Rome from Monday, the Yankees batters were up there to swing for contact Monday night, leading to more contact early in the at bats. Meisner finishes his season with the Cyclones red hot over his last six starts: 1.51 ERA over 35.2 IP with 31 hits allowed, a 38 SO: 6 BB (26.6 K%: 4.2 BB%) ratio, and a .589 OPS against. From what I’ve heard and read, it seems that Casey has improved his change-up and curveball significantly this season, and that he now feels comfortable throwing all three pitches in any count. It’s great to see how much he’s improved this year, and I look forward to watching him pitch for Savannah to start 2015.
