Recapish
The
Fireflies dropped their third straight to West Virginia Sunday afternoon to
take a series loss after rain delays knocked both starters out of this game
early. Columbia was down just 2-0 when the game resumed after a long rain delay
in the 4th, and then they scratched a run out in the 5th,
but the Power extended their lead to 6-1 against the Fireflies pen over the
next two innings.
Harol
Gonzalez allowed a single to the first batter of the game, but Sandy Santos
would be erased on the bases trying to steal with Ali Sanchez behind the plate.
Gonzalez needed just 9 pitches to finish the 1st, and walked off the
mound after striking out Hunter Owen.
After
three hits on Saturday, Gene Cone started his Sunday with a double to LF, but
never advanced beyond second base in the 1st.
The
Power again got the leadoff man on in the 2nd when Albert Baur
singled, and then Harol issued his first of two walks in the game to put two on
with nobody out. Trae Arbet was up next and he laid down a sac bunt fielded by Sanchez, but Reed Gamache did not make the catch at first base,
which opened the door for Baur to score. West Virginia made it a 2-0 on a sac
fly from Brent Gibbs.
Nice play from Paez to end the frame |
Gonzalez
allowed a single and issued a walk to the next batter in the 3rd,
but his troubles were limited because Sanchez threw out another would-be base
stealer before Santos walked.
After
the rain delay, Michael Paez came out and singled in the 4th, but it
led to nothing. He added another single and stole second base in the 6th
(his sixth steal in eight attempts this year), but it also led to nothing.
Taylor
Henry took over for Harol in the 5th and he struck out two while
working a scoreless inning. Unfortunately, his second inning of work did not go
as well, as the Power got to him for three runs in the 6th. His three strikeouts from the game are shown below.
Before
the Power put this game seemingly out of reach, Tim Tebow connected for his
third homer of the year leading off the 5t, which made it a 2-1 game. Desmond
Lindsay added a single three batters later, but a Cone double play grounder cut
short any further threat.
Carlos
Munos and Adrian Valerio doubled for the Power in he 6th, but then
Henry stranded two in scoring position to end his outing. Matt Blackham took
the ball next for Columbia, and he came out of the pen wild. He issued a
leadoff walk and hit a batter to load the bases, but then escaped with just one
run allowed thanks to a strikeout and double play turned behind him.
Adonis
Uceta and Max Kuhns combined to work the final two innings perfectly for the
Fireflies, with Kuhns picking up a strikeout of Owen in the 9th.
The Fireflies worked back-to-back walks ahead of Tebow in the bottom of the 9th, and he came through with an RBI double to RF. Columbia scratched out another run on the next play, but they had to trade it for an out, and it proved too little, too late.

With
this disappointing series loss behind them, the Fireflies turn their attention
to in-state rival Charleston. Columbia turns to co-ace Jordan Humphreys (6-1,
1.81 ERA) in the series opener, which is scheduled for Monday night at 7:05 PM.
