McGowan was very hittable for St. Lucie on the 4th of July, and Fort

finally broke through for 3 runs in the 9th, but their comeback rally
was too little too late.

Post-game recap: The
Cyclones got another great outing from their starting pitcher Saturday night,
as Matt Blackham provided the fireworks from the mound on this 4th
of July. Blackham has been ridiculous over his first 3 starts, and he’s up to a
25 K: 6 BB ratio over 18.2 IP, with only 3 runs allowed on 9 hits. He’d only
allow a pair of singles and a walk over 7 innings in this one, which was good,
because the Cyclones bats didn’t get much going either. They’d scratch out a
run with two outs in the 4th after Vinny Siena reached on a single
to LF. The next two batters walked to load the bases, and then Siena scored on
a wild pitch. Brosher gave the Cyclones an insurance run in the 8th,
leading off the inning with his first bomb of the year.

Post-game recap: After
struggling over the first 2 innings, it looked like it was going to be another
rough outing for Erik Manoah, but then he settled in to finish a quality start
in Burlington. Unfortunately, the Royals starting pitcher was able to settle in
quicker than Manoah, and the K-Mets couldn’t overcome the early 3-1 deficit.
The Mets took a 1-0 lead in the 1st, but they were set up for a
bigger inning, as Carpio and Berrios started the game with consecutive singles.
Manoah hit the first batter of the game, and then allowed consecutive doubles
after a sac bunt, which gave the Royals a 2-1 lead. They’d load the bases with
0 outs against Manoah in the 2nd, putting him up against the ropes
with a chance to put this game out of reach, but then something changed for
Manoah. He’d strike out 2 of the final 3 batters in the frame, but a run scored
on a groundout to 3B. He’d retire 14 of the final 17 batters to face him in the
game, with the only base runners coming on a HBP and two walks. Whatever
started working for him, hopefully he can build some confidence on it moving
forward. The Mets added a run in the 4th after Milton Ramos led off
with a triple, but again wasted an opportunity for more in the frame. McIlraith
worked two scoreless innings in relief of Manoah, working around a single in
the 7th and a walk in the 8th.

Andrew Church (W, 1-0, 3.00 ERA) – 2 IP, H, 3 SO, 1 GO: 1 FO
Post-game recap: This
GCL Mets game was important because it featured some interesting names within
the system that are working their way back from injuries. Starter Chris Flexen
was looking like an interesting young arm from the 14th round of the
2012 draft before Tommy John surgery set him back midway through the 2014
season. He just turned 21 Wednesday, so I don’t care what the results look like
for Flexen this year, he just needs to pitch every 5th/6th
day and stay healthy, and then we can worry about results next year. Johnny
Magliozzi is a5’10” relief pitcher working his way back from TJS that can top
out at 95 MPH with good control. Jeff Walters would allow a pair of doubles
after the first batter of the inning reached on an error, and had to be
replaced with the only out recorded on a sac bunt. Church is coming back from a
minor XST injury, and pitched two scoreless innings before Mother Nature
intervened. The Mets scored all of their runs in the 4th, when 8 of
the first 9 batters reached, including 5 straight walks drawn. Right before the
game was called in the 5th, Ivan Wilson reached on an infield single
and was then replaced for pinch-runner Will Barring - could've been because of the rain, could've been nothing, but it seems odd.
Minors MVP of the Day
– There weren't any standout performances, so Gavin Cecchini's grand slam earns him the daily away today.
Minors Cy of the Day
– Matt Blackham has been very dominant over his first 3 pro starts for Brooklyn this year.
