St. Lucie had two rehabbing minor leaguers playing for them,
got a great start from John Gant, and collected 9 hits and 3 walks in the game,
yet they still lost 3-2. The Mets jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 2nd
when L.J. Mazzilli came home after a leadoff double. Dilson led off the 4th
with a double of his own, but with runners on the corners, L.J. struck out, and
Smith ending the frame by grounding into a 6-4-3 double play. Casey Turgeon
launched his first bomb of the year leading off the bottom of the 4th,
tying the game up at 1. The Mets threatened to take the lead again in the 5th,
but again the frame ended on a GIDP with runners on the corners. Maikis had led
off with a walk, but was caught stealing 2B. Rosario followed with a single,
and then the Mets put on the hit-and-run with Sabol up, and it led to a single
through the vacated right side of the infield – that’s just good/smart hitting.
Palm Beach would take their first lead with two outs in the 5th
thanks to a double and RBI single. Dom Smith couldn’t extend his hitting
streak, but he did walk in the 7th, and then came around to score
after consecutive two out singles from Sabol and Tharp. With Gant at his pitch
count and the game tied heading into the 9th, the Mets went to Mike
Hepple, who has been very reliable this year. Hepple allowed a leadoff single,
and then the Cardinals predictably bunted him over to 2B. The following batting
would reach on a grounder to Rosario that put runners on the corners with one out.
The Mets went to lefty Kyle Regnault to face lefty Jimmy Bosco, but Kyle would
unleash a wild pitch before the at bat ended, allowing the runner to come home
from 3B for a walk off win.

Bullpen:
Ricky Knapp (W, 1-0, 1.35 ERA) – 5 IP, 4 H, R (0 ER), 5 SO, HBP,
63 Pitches (46 Strikes), 6 GO: 2 FO, 1 IR – 1 S
The Sand Gnats wasted numerous opportunities, and played
poor defense, but got good pitching, and scratched out a win in the opener
against Greenville. Savannah starter Martires Arias was wildly effective over
his 4+ innings, nearly matching his career high of 8 strikeouts, but his
inefficiency on the mound held him to just 4 IP. Greenville features Red Sox
touted prospect Yoan Moncada, who struck out three times in the game, including
twice against Arias. The Drive had a golden opportunity to break things open in
the 3rd, loading the bases with nobody out, but Arias struck out
Derek Miller, and induced a double play groundball from Rafael Devers. The
Gnats jumped ahead in the bottom of the 4th, scoring 3 runs on 5
hits in the frame. Becerra got it started with a double to CF, his 14th
of the year, which puts him in a tie for 3rd in the SAL. Garcia
singled him over to 3B, and then Leroux singled him in. The next two batters
would be retired without advancing the runners, but then Vicente Lupo singled
home Garcia, and Biondi bunt singled Leroux home from 3B. After walked the
leadoff batter in the 5th, Ricky Knapp came in for Arias, and he’d
allow consecutive singles to plate the first Drive run. Greenville would add
another run in the frame on a fielding error by Luis Guillorme, but they
wouldn’t get anything going again until the 9th. In the 8th,
Biondi hit a two out double, and then scored on Guillorme’s first hit of the
game, giving Savannah an insurance run. After retiring 11 of 12, Knapp allowed
two singles in the 9th, although one batter was erased on a caught
stealing. Pitching coach Marc Valdes came out for a visit after the second hit,
and Knapp responded with a strikeout on three pitches to end the game.

Minors MVP of the Day
– Nod to Patrick Biondi, who has a .300+ AVG, picked up 3 hits, and gave the Gnats an insurance run in the 8th when he doubled and scored.
Minors Cy of the Day
– John Gant and Luis Cessa both deserved the win, but I thought Gant's line was a little better. It won't be long until he's back!
