Recap:
If
it weren’t for the 8-9 hitters, Greg Peavey might’ve navigated his way through
a decent start Monday night. However, LF Chris Dominguez and the opposing
starter Jason Berken went 4-4 off Peavey, with two doubles and 3 RBI’s – all
from the pitcher! After giving up the second RBI-hit of the night to Berken in
the 4th, Peavey was unable to handle the op of the order a third
time, ultimately surrendering four runs in his final frame. The 51s offense
combined for their usual strong output, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the
Grizzlies lead. Dan Runzier got the final out in the top of the 8th,
hit for himself in the bottom, and worked a strong 9th to get the
save for Fresno.
Andrew
Brown and Zach Lutz have been the hottest 51s everyday hitters of late (cough
Cesar needs to play daily cough), and together they helped the 51s to an early
1-0 lead –Brown doubled, Lutz singled him in. However, Fresno would bounce back
for two runs in the bottom of the inning, behind a big two-run double from
Berken. An Omar Quintanilla error forced Peavey to get a fourth out in the
inning, and he ended up throwing 35 pitches total in the 2nd. Things
were looking a little better for Peavey after the 3rd, as he only
had to walk around a walk, but they got ugly in the 4th. Fresno
wasn’t chasing anything and they were fouling off any good pitches Peavey could
make until they’d inevitably get something to hit. They ended up with four runs
off five hits, including two doubles, a wild pitch and a stolen base.
The
51s comeback efforts were stifled when Fresno brought in Mason Tobin, who
really changed the outlook of the game with his work. He came in with a 6-4
lead against the top offense in the PCL, no reason that should feel safe, but
he struck out three and looked very strong. The 51s appeared to have a rally
going in the 8th, but Dan Runzler came in to shut it down. Xorge
Carrillo hit a very hard line drive into the left-center field gap, but Q held
up at 1B for some reason and didn’t score on the play. He would eventually
score on an M∂D sac fly, but it was not a very good play. Cesar
Puello got to pinch-hit and was walked. Erik Goeddel came in for the bottom
of the 8th and looked nasty against the 7-8 hitters, but then walked
the opposing relief pitcher and gave up a flare RBI single to Gary
Brown. He has very good stuff and looks like he can be a good late inning
reliever, but he can’t keep doing dumb stuff like that.
Looking
ahead, the 51s send Carlos
Alvarado to the mound Tuesday afternoon at 3:05 PM ET opposite Mike Kickham.
Alvarado was effectively wild in his first
start of the season, allowing only one run off one hit and six walks
through five against El Paso. Kickham is coming off a rough two-inning
performance against Albany last week in which he gave up 9 ER on 11 hits,
including 3 homeruns.
