Recap:
Nearly
8,000 fans were in attendance to watch the red hot Las Vegas 51s, on a cloudy
evening at Cashman Field, which only holds about 9,500 people (12,500 if you
include standing room). The 51s would jump out to a 5-0 lead in the 1st
and never look back – basically, their recipe for success this past week. For
the 51s, they got another strong start from top Mets prospect Jacob ∂eGrom, who
has maybe been the best of the three AAA stud starting prospects despite being
considered not quite as good as Montero and Thor by most coming into the
season. Thanks to some occasional shaky control, ∂eGrom would be forced to come
out after 5 innings with his pitch count already at 90+. Joel Carreno would
come in for 3 sparkling innings, keeping Tacoma scoreless before handing the
ball off to Vic Black to finish what would become an 11-3 victory.
Taylor
Teagarden provided the biggest hit of the night with two outs and two on in the
1st inning when he drove his 4th HR of the season over
the RF wall. Chance Ruffin had allowed the first 4 runners to reach base – two
singles up the middle followed by two walks – but appeared on the verge of
getting out of the inning with only 2 runs allowed before the Teagarden blast.
Like most pitchers who have faced the 51s lately, Ruffin found himself giving
up hits even when he made a good pitch, and paying for nearly all of his walks
or hits allowed. There was a glimmer of hope that he might last a few more
innings when he struck out back-to-back 51s to end the 2nd, but had
to be taken out in the 3rd when he walked the bases loaded. However,
it didn’t matter who was pitching for the Rainiers, as the 51s kept tacking on
hits and runs, not being retired in order until the 8th inning.
Teagarden would hit his 2nd HR of the night in the 6th
and Andrew Brown added his 2nd in two games in the 7th.
Vic
Black didn’t really have a terrible 9th inning – he’d give up an unearned
run after the leadoff batter reached on an error – but he walked a batter on 4
pitches with an 8 run lead, and I just don’t get that. I’ve noted several
random, unacceptable walks by 51 relievers during their recent hot streak –
unacceptable considering the score. I’d think up by 8 is when Vic Black would
rather give up a hit on a fastball down the middle than another walk.
Jacob
∂eGrom throws fastball in the low 90’s, a hard slider, and a change-up, which,
according to broadcaster Russ Langer’s game preview, is what people are saying
is making the difference this year, as it has been much improved. Here’s a
closer look at his start:
1st inning – Was sitting 92-94 MPH in the first and
getting ahead in the count by attacking the zone. Unfortunately, Tacoma kept
fouling the ball off, leading to a 22-pitch inning and some hard contact.
2nd inning – Got in trouble with a leadoff walk to Endy
Chavez. Was not missing by much, and the ump was getting some long stares from the
51s after some of his calls, but his two walks in the inning would burn him for
a run and 28 more pitches. Otherwise, gave up a line drive double to the
corner, some fly balls that were hit pretty well but caught and a grounder that
an actual SS might get to.
3rd inning – After walking Nick Franklin on 6 pitches to
leadoff the inning, ∂eGrom would bounce back to retire the next 3 batters on 8
pitches with 3 weak groundouts, 2 nearly identical ones right at Lutz.
4th inning – Got in trouble by letting the leadoff
hitter get on for the 3rd straight inning, this time by the double –
next batter singled to put runners on the corners with no outs. Recovered to
get the next batter to fly out for a sac fly – an acceptable trade with a 6-1
lead – and a strike out on the next two batters. He would give a single on a
groundball up the middle before getting Nick Franklin swinging on a well place
slider. Again, he bounced back in the inning, but the early trouble led to an
18-pitch inning, and 82 pitches through 4 innings is not efficient.
5th inning – Had a very nice bounce back inning to
finish his night. He worked around a leadoff single passed a diving Allen at 1B
by inducing more weak contact to the next three hitters. Only needed 9 pitchers
to retire the side.
Overall,
it was a strong performance by Jacob ∂eGrom against the PCL’s best offense
(they have slightly better average and slugging rates than the 51s, who have
the better on base rate) in a hitter’s park. He got ahead in the count a lot
and was aggressive in the strike zone, which I like to see. Would have liked to
see him go deeper in the game, but he saw a number of long at-bats in the first
two innings, as these Tacoma hitters know how to work a count. He’d also settle
down to throw 41 pitches over the final 3 innings, which is a good adjustment
to see.
Looking
ahead, the 51s send Logan Verrett to the hill in the Sunday matinee as they go
for a sweep of Tacoma and their 7th straight win. Verrett is 1-1 on
the season and will be looking to bounce back from his shortest outing of the
season last time out against El Paso.
