Recapish
The
Fireflies took the rubber game of their series with the rival Charleston River
Dogs Wednesday night, winning 4-1 thanks to another late inning charge.
Columbia won after jumping ahead in the 8th inning Tuesday night,
which is when they struck the final blow in the finale Wednesday.
Bryce
Beeler made his second start of the season for Columbia and was excellent. Per
the Fireflies announcers, Mets people think Beeler’s changeup will allow him to
have success as a starter. He also appears to throw a low-90’s heater and sharp
breaking curve.
After finishing Gosuke Katoh on 3
pitches for a strikeout to start his night, Beeler needed only 3 more pitches
to round out a perfect 1st inning. He made a mistake in the 2nd
and Jhalan Jackson punished it for the River Dogs only run of the game. Jackson
hit it off the batters eye above the big CF wall, just to the left of dead
center.
Beeler settled in nicely after
that, allowing just one River Dogs batter to reach 2B. Unfortunately for
Beeler, he was up against the toughest pitcher to score against in the SAL.
Nestor Cortes had allowed just 4 ER coming into this game, but the Fireflies
made that 5 ER before the night was over. Columbia managed just a pair of
singles against Cortes over the first 6 innings, but doubled that hit total in
the 7th, when Jeff Diehl had a huge double to tie the game.
Witt Haggard took over for the
Fireflies in the 8th and worked around a two out single to keep
things tied. His scoreless frame earned him a win since the Fireflies broke out
in the bottom half of the frame. Recently returned Eudor Garcia led off the
frame with a single and then scored on Vicente Lupo’s 7th double of
the season. Enmanuel Zabala added an RBI triple and came home to make it a
comfortable 4-1 lead.
With his team ahead, Manager Jose
Leger brought in Alex Palsha to close out the series win. Palsha worked around
a leadoff walk to pickup his 14th save of the season. I break down
the scoring details with highlights below, so enjoy! With this series wrapped
up, the Fireflies head on the road to Augusta for a weekend series. Gaby
Almonte (1-1, 4.29 ERA) is scheduled to start the opener in Augusta, and the
Fireflies will be back on MiLB.tv from home next Tuesday.

Rodriguez picked up his hit in the 1st, but Nestor Cortes faced the
minimum in the frame.
Jeff
Diehl singled leading off the 2nd inning, but again Cortes faced the
minimum in the frame.
Luis
Ortega was the next Fireflies batter to get a hit of Cortes, singling with one
out in the 7th. Ortega was erased on a caught stealing, but Kevin
Kacmarski kept the inning alive with a walk. Diehl made Cortes pay for that
walk, launching an RBI double to CF to tie the game at one.
Eudor
Garcia sparked the winning rally in the bottom of the 8th with a
leadoff single. He came around to score on Vicente Lupo’s 7th double
of the season, which gave Columbia their first lead of the game. Lupo was able
to walk home on Enmanuel Zabala’s triple, which was aided by Jhalan Jackson’s
missed diving attempt. Zabala came home on a sac fly to give the Fireflies some
insurance.
