Homeruns
Dominic Smith had two homeruns in
the past week, which is 1/3 of his total from all of 2015 in the FSL.
The cameras didn’t track Matt Oberste’s
homerun Saturday,
but you can check out the swing he used to mash it.
Travis Taijeron has almost quietly
been the 51s most productive hitter so far this year, and he was the most
productive hitter on the team last year, so he’s definitely going to see the
majors at some point. He added two more blasts to his stat line this past week.
Dilson Herrera hasn’t been healthy
for much of the season, but when he’s been good enough to play in the field,
he’s been good at the plate. Makes you wonder if the Mets knew he wouldn’t be
at full strength to start the year in the offseason. He had two homeruns in the
final two innings Tuesday,
and had tripled off the top of a tall wall in the 7th inning of that
game!

I’m not as high on T.J. Rivera as
others, but he’s putting together another great offensive campaign in the minors,
and should be in line for a bench opportunity at some point this year. He
started the homerfest Tuesday
with this blast to LF.
Brandon Nimmo has been playing for
Las Vegas since day one, so it’s easy to forget that he didn’t really start
playing in games until 7-10 days before that. His offseason injury caused him
to miss Spring Training, so it’s understandable he got off to a slow start.
He’s been heating up at the plate though lately, and connected for his first
blast of the year Thursday.
Defense
Dominic Smith has been smooth picks
over at 1B all year, but doesn’t often get tested. The play he made Saturday
was so good the data stringer originally credited it to the B-Mets second
baseman!
Just like R.A. Dickey,
knuckleballer Mickey Jannis finishes in a great fielding position, but he
didn’t catch this line drive Saturday,
it caught him.
Victor Cruzado isn’t known for
having many standout physical tools, but his arm has looked very nice in LF for
the B-Mets. He threw out a runner trying to leg out a double on Tuesday
in Portland, which is the second time he’s done that already in 2016.

In case you haven’t heard, Robert
Gsellman has added a slider this year, and it’s helped him become more of a
strikeout pitcher. The weather wasn’t great Sunday
in New Hampshire, and he got off to a slow start in the 1st, but
then settled down to give the B-Mets a very nice outing. He struck out 5 of the
final 10 Fisher Cats batters he faced on the day.

After Monday’s
start, Gabriel Ynoa is no longer the PCL ERA leader, but he’s still been pretty
impressive to date. He was mostly relying on a high-80’s sinker against El
Paso, which helped him to post a nice groundball rate, but he’s still not striking
many batters out.

Seth Lugo’s dead-arm phase appears
to be over, as he’s made two strong starts since returning from the 7-day DL.
He looked as good as he has this year over the first 5 innings Thursday,
but then struggled after a 25-minute rest and E6 to start the bottom of the 6th.
I also kept a pitch log from his start at Cashman Field on Saturday.

Bonus
Julio
Urias had a special
outing for the Oklahoma City Dodgers Wednesday afternoon, striking out 6
New Orleans batters over 6 hitless innings. The only baserunner he allowed came
on an E6 behind him, and he’d eventually pick a runner off 1B anyway, so he
still faced the minimum.
