Recap
The
B-Mets received some excellent defense and pitching Wednesday night, and handed
a 4-3 lead to their usually reliable bullpen, but Matt Koch struggled in the 8th,
allowing Erie to earn a comeback win. It seemed like someone was making a great
play behind Lugo in each of the first few innings, but then he started mixing
in a slow curveball (clocked at below 70 MPH, per the Erie announcers), and
that helped him rack up a pair of strikeouts in each of the final 3 innings.
The B-Mets jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the 3rd, collecting 5
straight hits with two outs (see highlights below), but then couldn’t add on
against the Erie pen. Koch allowed the first 4 to reach as Erie took over in
the 8th, and would eventually be replaced by Adam Kolarek, who
struck out the final two batters of the frame to keep it a 1 run game. The
B-Mets did manage two hits and a walk in the 9th, but Josh Rodriguez
was caught trying to steal 2B, and then Gavin Cecchini went down swinging with
the trying run on 3B to end the game.
June
wasn’t the best month for Lugo, and his low strikeout rate for the month was
likely a big part of the problem. He wasn’t inducing many swinging strikes early
Wednesday night, but then induced 10 over the final 3 innings while throwing a
higher rate of curveballs. It’s a big curveball that he can locate really well,
so it’s an important weapon for him, and keeps hitters off his low-90’s
fastball. He allowed a solo homerun on the first pitch of the 3rd,
but then would retire 8 straight before the 6th inning. 3 of the
first 4 batters of the 6th would reach against him on 2 singles and
a double, but he bounced back to strike out the final two in the 6th
and then the final two in the 7th.
This
series wraps up Thursday night at 7:05 PM, with Gabriel Ynoa scheduled to pitch
for Binghamton in the rubber match.
Scoring Highlights
The
B-Mets scored all of their runs with 2 outs in the 3rd, sparked by
Eudy Pina’s third double in 2 games against Erie, which was the first of 5
straight hits from Binghamton. Cecchini singled him home, went to 3B on a
single from L.J. Mazzilli, and then scored on another Michael Conforto RBI hit.
Brock Peterson capped the rally with a 2 run double to LF for a 4-0 lead.
Pina
and Cecchini added two out singles in the 7th, but L.J. Mazzilli
would line out to SS to end the frame.

for the out in the 1st.

Lugo struck out Wade Gaynor for the second out of the 2nd
inning, and his first strikeout of the game.
His next strikeout was again of Gaynor, this time for the
second out as part of a 1-2-3 4th inning.
He’d strike out the first two batters in the 5th (he’d finish 1 strike-3 shy of an immaculate inning)
