Recap

The Cyclones took the rubber match in Aberdeen Sunday evening behind a huge night from Zach Mathieu at the plate, and some strong pitching. Brooklyn starter Eddie Villasmil would allow only 4 hits over his 6 innings, but one of those hits allowed was a two run bomb to Ryan Mountcastle (on the first pitch Mountcastle saw in the NYPL), which gave the Iron Birds a 2-0 lead in the 2nd. The Cyclones gradually came back in this game, with Jeff Diehl and Zach Mathieu at the center of their 3 one-run rallies. Jose Celas, P.J. Conlon, and Carlos Valdez each worked a scoreless inning in relief of Villasmil, holding onto the tight one run lead. After emerging at the end of extended spring training (per manager Tom Gamboa), Celas has mostly had a lost season, so it was nice to see him throwing a scoreless inning to earn the win.
Check out the scoring details below, including some highlights of the Cyclones offense. The Cyclones head home to begin a series with Hudson Valley Monday night at 7:00 PM, with Tyler Badamo (3-6, 3.53 ERA) scheduled to pitch for Brooklyn.

Recap

Right as this game was starting, the Aberdeen announcer mentioned how bad the Cyclones offense has been in 2015. While that may be true even after this 12-run outburst, I bet he’s wishing that he had just bit his tongue after the lashing the Iron Birds pitching staff took tonight. The Cyclones scored all 12 runs of their over the first 4 innings, with Alfredo Reyes and Vinny Siena heading to the plate 4 times in those first 4 frames. Reyes and Jose Garcia led the way on offense, each providing 2 hits, including a double, and they combined for 7 RBI’s. Branden Kaupe had his best night of the year, hitting two RBI singles to RF, and scoring after reaching on an infield single for his third hit of the night. While everything was clicking on offense early, the Cyclones pitching went through some rough patches. Andrew Church was charged with 6 runs on 12 hits and 2 walks, and he’d work only one perfect inning. Brandon Welch, Craig Missigman, and Alex Palsha all kept Aberdeen off the scoreboard, but the game would get weird when Ruben Reyes entered in the 8th – see below for those details, scoring highlights and details, and a few defense highlights.
This series wraps up Sunday evening at 5:35 PM, with Edioglis Villasmil (0-1, 1.93 ERA) scheduled to start for the Cyclones.

Recap

The Cyclones salvaged a win from their 3-game series with Staten Island Friday night behind some strong pitching and a Jeff Diehl blast. Mets 3B prospect David Thompson would reach and score in both the 2nd and 4th innings, and then the newest Brooklyn player Hengelbert Rojas doubled and scored in the 5th, which gave the Cyclones a 4-0 lead. Kevin Canelon came out firing strikes for the Cyclones, needing just 43 pitches through the first 4 innings, but then the Yankees started smacking him around in the 5th, and he had to be removed one out shy of qualifying for the win. Criag Missigman came into the 4-3 game with 2 runners on base, but induced a groundout from Jhalan Jackson to escape the jam. Missigman would work another scoreless frame in the 6th, and then Corey Taylor, P.J. Conlon, and Alex Palsha combined to keep Staten Island scoreless over the final 3 frames.
Looking ahead, the Cyclones head home to face Vermont Saturday evening at 6:00 PM, with Tyler Badamo scheduled to pitch in the opener for Brooklyn.
