Recap
Corey
Oswalt continued his recent string of strong starts Saturday night in
Greenville with one of his best outings of the year, limiting the Drive to just
one run as the Gnats took the opener. Oswalt has now gone 6+ IP in 4 straight
starts (28.2 IP), with a 1.57 ERA, on 24 hits allowed, and 17 K: 7 BB. The
Gnats struggled to get anything going early against Greenville starter Dedgar
Jimenez, who would allow just 3 hits and a walk, but left after 4 innings. They
finally broke the scoreless tie when Vicente Lupo hit a mammoth homerun to CF,
apparently landing well beyond the 420-foot sign, although I don't think you can see the ball on the Greenville feed – the feed was not
great overall, as they often cut to a poor secondary camera as the pitch was
being delivered, so a lot of action was missed. Cameron Griffin replaced Oswalt
when Greenville broke the shutout in the 8th inning, recording the
final two outs after an initial walk. James Duff came in for the last inning,
and he’d strike out Danny Bethea to end the game.
Oswalt
had excellent control Saturday night, throwing more than 70% strikes, which led
to a lot of early contact. He’s allowed a high number of hits to this point in
the season, but he did a good job of limiting hard contact in this start. It
was hard to get a good read on his stuff with the constant camera switches, but
there are a few shots added below. Oswalt retired the first 9 in a row, and
then Moncada led off the 4th with a single. He’d allow a base runner
in each of his final 4 frames on the mound, but was able to successfully navigate
the threats until the 8th. Bryan Hudson hit a leadoff double in the
8th, and then Moncada singled him home two batters later – that made
Moncada 2-3 with a walk and an RBI against Oswalt.

Michael
Katz picked up his first double of the game with two outs in the 6th
inning.
Vicente Lupo put the first run on the scoreboard with a solo blast in the 7th.
After John Mora walked with one out in the 8th, Katz doubled him home to make it a 2-0 game. Jon Leroux followed with an RBI single for the insurance run.
Natanael Ramos picked up his first 2 hits in the SAL during this game, including this single to the monster in the 9th.
Bonus Defense
Unfortunately,
Luis Guillorme had only the one chance on the field Saturday, and it was an
easy one for him.
J.C. Rodriguez had a quick transfer after fielding the groundball up the middle, and then got enough on his throw to record the out at 1B.
