Recap

While most of the country was focused on Las Vegas Saturday night for the jerks punching each other in the face, I was more interested in the stud starting across town. Can’t speak for the rest of the country, but I was not disappointed watching Thor pitch as well as he has in AAA for a second straight game. After his first pitch was lined into the RF corner for a double, Thor bounced back to retire the next batter with a strikeout, and then never looked back. The 51s would score two runs in the bottom of the 1st, thanks to a two-out rally started by Matt Reynolds, but then went as cold as the Reno batters against Thor. Cory Vaughn added a no-doubter in the 6th for an insurance run, continuing his white-hot series against Reno - he is 7-8 with 2 walks drawn. John Church and Scott Rice combined to pitch two scoreless innings over the final two frames, and both have looked very good lately.

Thor focused on his great fastball/curveball combo tonight, and was dominating like he always should be. From Table 1, it might not seem like he threw as many curveballs early, but compared to 2014 Thor, 9 curves over the first 3 innings is a lot. Not only did he throw more curves early, he also threw back-to-back curves on multiple occasions, and went almost exclusively to the curve in the final AB of the 6th and 7th inning. There were a few long streaks of only fastballs from Thor tonight, but hitters couldn’t just wait on it as comfortably as in 2014, because he had already established that he’d go to his curve in any count. If he keeps this pace up, not sure the Mets will be able to ignore him for very long.
The series concludes Sunday at 3:05 PM, with Darin Gorski scheduled to pitch for Las Vegas.
